2019 has been a jammed packed year for all of us here at Wensleydale Creamery. From the opening of our new Yorkshire Wensleydale Cheese Experience Demonstration Room which has shown our 350,000 visitors how our award-winning Yorkshire Wensleydale is handmade, to helping our number one Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese fans; Wallace and Gromit celebrate their 30th Anniversary. Not to mention BBC’s Songs of Praise coming to the creamery and filming how our cheese is made inside the factory – definitely not one to forget.
Our show season has certainly been a successful one, with a tally of nearly 80 Bronze, Silver and Gold awards for our cheese, butter and yogurt in national and international shows, including 3 of our cheeses coming in the top 3 in the world!
The show season started with the British Cheese Awards at the Royal Bath and West Show where we won a total of 10 awards, including a Gold for our much-loved Yorkshire Wensleydale with Cranberries! A few weeks later followed more success in the Royal Cheshire County Show, with 4 Gold Awards for our cheese including our Yorkshire Wensleydale and Wensleydale Blue – a great start to the season.
For the next show we were on our home turf with our highlight of the show season ‘The Great Yorkshire Show’. This is where we launched our new ‘Crumble It!’ campaign; where we showed the crowds of the Yorkshire Show how Yorkshire Wensleydale can be crumbled into different recipes such as summer salads and tartlets. The campaign was a great hit with over 500 samples tried, tasted and loved by the public. However, from our success at The Great Yorkshire Cheese & Dairy Show in 2019; we were eager to see how we had favoured this year. It did not disappoint; we came home with a total of 9 awards including 4 Gold awards with our Yorkshire Butter and Yorkshire Wensleydale and Cranberries taking home another award and Kit Calvert not only winning Gold but Best Yorkshire Product as well – there was certainly a lot of smiling faces from our expert Cheese-makers!
The end of the summer saw us travel down to a very rainy Cheshire for the International Cheese Awards in Nantwich. However, the poor weather did not put us off getting to meet some of the best cheese-makers in the industry and trying some of their amazing cheese nor did it dampen our spirit with our 14 Gold and Silver Awards being taken back home to Yorkshire!
We did not stop there! In September we hosted our third annual Cheese Festival at our Visitor Centre and it was a great success; with some of the best Yorkshire produce stall holders attending as well as a record number of visitors. Not to mention September also gave us; 2 Gold awards being won at the Global Cheese Awards with Yorkshire Wensleydale taking home another much-deserved award. However, the finale of the show season was the World Cheese Awards, which took place in Italy this year with over 3,800 cheese types being entered into the Awards. The Wensleydale Creamery placed top 3 in the world with 4 of its cheese including, Extra Mature Yorkshire Cheddar, Yorkshire Red, Yorkshire Wensleydale and Wensleydale Blue and we couldn’t be happier with that result to end the show season!
However, it wasn’t just our cheese that was winning awards! Recent wins at the Yorkshire Post Rural Awards with Best Rural Visitor Attraction & Rural Retailer of the Year, and the silver award in the Taste of England category at the Welcome To Yorkshire Awards, recognised the quality of our Visitor Centre within the tourism industry! Coming up against some of Yorkshire’s finest establishments and very large attractions – we’re still over the moon, star-struck and celebrating!
As we come to the end of our year-round up, we can’t forget to mention our excitement in welcoming our new brand, ‘The Yorkshire Creamery’! They have released a range of three cheeses; Extra Mature Yorkshire Cheddar, Yorkshire Red and Double Yorkshire into major supermarkets in the North of England including Tesco’s, Morrisons, Co-Op and Asda.
As the end of 2019 approaches, we are thrilled with the recognition we have received this year for our products & Visitor Centre and would like to thank each and every customer, visitor and lover of cheese for another ‘grate’ year! We are very much looking forward to see what lies ahead for us as we go into 2020!
