Wensleydale Creamery Wins Nine Awards And Two Trophies At Great Yorkshire Show
Jul 22, 2011
The Wensleydale Creamery has made its mark at this year’s Great Yorkshire Cheese & Dairy Show winning nine awards and two ‘best in show’ trophies for a variety of its cheeses.
At the Show, the honours comprised:
• Wensleydale Cup for Best Wensleydale Cheese
• Trophy for Best Blue Cheese in Show for Jervaulx Blue
• Real Yorkshire Wensleydale – one gold, two silvers and one bronze
• Jervaulx Blue – two golds • Real Yorkshire Wensleydale with Cranberries – gold
• Abbot’s Bronze, cheddar cheese with balsamic onion – silver
• Fountains Gold with cracked black pepper – silver
David Hartley, The Wensleydale Creamery’s managing director, said: “To win so many medals and two ‘best in show’ trophies is testament to the expertise of our master cheese makers who create a range of superb cheese.
“It also reflects the quality of the ingredients we use. This includes the milk for our Real Yorkshire Wensleydale, being supplied by a network of Dales family-run farms where the cows graze limestone meadows, which contributes to its special taste.
“We are especially proud to be bringing the cup for the best Wensleydale cheese to its ancestral home. It is where Wensleydale cheese originated and today our Real Yorkshire Wensleydale is the only Wensleydale cheese still actually made in the Dale.”
The Wensleydale Creamery uses traditional methods to handcraft cheese to time-honoured recipes, as well as being innovative with the development of new recipes. Jervaulx Blue, which took two gold awards and the trophy for best blue cheese in show, was its most significant product launch last year and is continuing to build on its initial success with positive sales figures and a number of awards.
It is aimed at the sector of the market that is adopting a more continental taste and blends the traditional characteristics of blue cheese with a more creamy and sophisticated texture and taste.
