The Wensleydale Creamery, at Hawes, in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, is the only UK cheese producer to be ranked in the ‘world’s top 10 cheese factories’ list compiled by members and editors of the prestigious US travel website www.virtualtourist.com.
The website, which has over one million members, produced the listing which included household names such as Camembert in France and Gruyere in Switzerland.
The Wensleydale Creamery which boasts a cheese-making viewing gallery has recently invested £800,000 expanding and improving its Visitor Centre including a new coffee shop, expanded cheese shop and deli with sampling area, enlarged gift shop and a new-look licensed restaurant.
From the cheese-making viewing gallery, visitors can watch a magical performance of cutting, stirring, pitching and salting unfold. Done with skilled hands, this really is Real Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese-making ‘par excellence’.
Handcrafted, to a time-honoured recipe, Real Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese is made using milk from more than 40 local farms - where cows graze the sweet limestone meadows rich in wild flowers, herbs and grasses.
David Hartley, The Wensleydale Creamery’s managing director, said: “The Wensleydale Creamery is helping strengthen the sustainability of the Dales as a tourist destination through the substantial expansion of its Visitor Centre.
“The new-look Visitor Centre has been a real success but I don’t think any of us realised or appreciated that it had such a strong international following!
“To be acknowledged by such an influential website as being in the top ten in the world is very flattering and testament to the investment made in the Visitor Centre and the hard work and professionalism of our staff.”
