Real Yorkshire Wensleydale Named As An International Icon

Aug 04, 2010

The Wensleydale Creamery’s Real Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese has been officially recognised as a UK icon in an extensive international survey.

Real Yorkshire Wensleydale Named As An International Icon

It came third after Yorkshire pudding and Yorkshire tea in a survey identifying ten things people most associate with the county.

The poll, conducted by tourism agency Visit York, quizzed 4,000 people – only 13 per cent based in Yorkshire, with the rest coming from elsewhere in the UK and overseas.

David Hartley, The Wensleydale Creamery’s Managing Director, said: “This is a tremendous accolade for all those involved in making Real Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese – from the farmers who supply the milk to our expert cheese makers who handcraft the cheese to time-honoured recipes.

“About 70 years ago, when T S Elliott* wrote about things that were culturally identified with Britain he put Wensleydale Cheese on his list, so it is great to see that Real Yorkshire Wensleydale is still a cultural hit today.”

Mr Hartley added: “The fact that Real Yorkshire Wensleydale has been ranked so highly in an international survey further endorses its application for protected food status.”

It is cows grazing on the Dale’s limestone meadows that helps give Real Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese, the only Wensleydale actually made in Wensleydale, its unique creamy flavour.

The Creamery, which puts £11m a year into the local rural economy through salaries, milk payments and purchases, sources its milk from a network of more than 50 Dales farms, mostly family run and reliant on The Creamery for their livelihoods.
