The Wensleydale Creamery, at Hawes in North Yorkshire, is adding more weight to its “Making Provenance Matter” campaign to demonstrate the provenance of Real Yorkshire Wensleydale Cheese by investing in its first ever television commercial.

It has already started to label Real Yorkshire Wensleydale with a Stamp of Authenticity to let consumers know it is the only Wensleydale cheese actually made in Wensleydale.

The campaign has been launched in anticipation of The Wensleydale Creamery’s application for Protected Designation of Origin being approved by Brussels.

David Hartley, The Wensleydale Creamery’s Managing Director, said: “We are investing in a TV advert and branding Real Yorkshire Wensleydale with a Stamp of Authenticity as part of a concerted campaign to pre-empt the granting of the PDO, which is currently being considered by Europe. We hope to have a decision on this next year.

“After all, the Italians have their Parma ham and the Greeks have their Feta cheese and thanks to this campaign customers will be able to see that Real Yorkshire Wensleydale Cheese is the genuine article with it being made in Hawes in the heart of Wensleydale.

“We know from research that people want to know where goods come from and that is why we are putting measures in place to let them know about the quality and provenance of Real Yorkshire Wensleydale Cheese.”

The television commercial focuses on the where the cheese is made. It also highlights that the milk, which helps give Real Yorkshire Wensleydale its unique creamy flavour, comes from cows grazing on grass in the dale’s limestone meadows.

It also poses the question – “Maybe it’s just us, but if a cheese calls itself Wensleydale, shouldn’t it come from Wensleydale?”
