Cricketing star, Strictly Come Dancing winner and proud Yorkshireman Darren Gough has been enlisted to launch a nationwide campaign to demonstrate the provenance of Real Yorkshire Wensleydale Cheese.

Due to customer demand, The Wensleydale Creamery, based at Hawes in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, is to label its Real Yorkshire Wensleydale Cheeses with a Stamp of Authenticity.

Darren Gough was in the area to champion Real Yorkshire Wensleydale Cheese with the message that it is the only Wensleydale cheese actually made in Wensleydale.

The former cricket international and winner of TV’s Strictly Come Dancing joined the master cheese makers at The Wensleydale Creamery to experience at first hand how Real Yorkshire Wensleydale Cheese is handcrafted to a time-honoured recipe, using milk from local farms.

He also visited Salt’s Delicatessen in Swinegate, Leeds, where he served Real Yorkshire Wensleydale Cheese to customers and helped make sandwiches using it as a delicious filling.

Darren said: “Forward-thinking supermarkets and independent retailers, like Salt’s Delicatessen, are to be applauded for getting behind home-grown businesses such as The Wensleydale Creamery which is vital to the survival of its local rural economy.

“As a proud Yorkshireman, I strongly believe we should be shouting loud and clear about the quality and provenance of Real Yorkshire Wensleydale Cheese and the fact that it is the only Wensleydale cheese that is actually made in Wensleydale.

“Customers like to know that what they are buying is the real thing and the Stamp of Authenticity, which has been launched by The Wensleydale Creamery, will help to do just that.

“To my mind Wensleydale cheese being made in other counties such as Cheshire and Lancashire is just plain daft.”

David Hartley, The Wensleydale Creamery’s Managing Director, said: “Our market research has shown that consumers like products that clearly show where they are from as they are keen to buy the genuine article.

“This is why we have decided to include a ‘hallmark’ on the packaging of Real Yorkshire Wensleydale Cheese to let people know where it comes from. All of this further validates The Wensleydale Creamery’s Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) application, which is currently being processed by Brussels.”

He added: “Up to now the animated duo Wallace and Gromit have very much been figure heads for Wensleydale cheese, and we will still continue our partnership with them.

“However, we felt it was time to adopt an ambassador to champion Real Yorkshire Wensleydale Cheese with more adult appeal to communicate our messages of quality, authenticity and provenance.”
