Protected Designation of Origin Information

Protected Designation of Origin

The term PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) covers the term used to describe foodstuffs which are produced, processed and prepared in a given geographical area using recognised know-how.

We have applied for PDO status for ‘Yorkshire Wensleydale’. Only cheese made in the designated ‘Wensleydale’ area (as defined in the application), using raw materials from the designated area i.e. Wensleydale milk, to a time-honoured traditional recipe.

Our bid to protect Real Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese has moved into a significant new phase including a call to action for our supporters to add their voice to the campaign.

We have set up this special website page to allow you to register your support for the PDO application and place your comments on our website.

The PDO system aims to promote and protect food products in the EU and is used to describe foods that are produced, processed and prepared in a given geographical area using traditional methods.

If the bid is successful it will mean that you will know you are eating the real thing - a hand-crafted Wensleydale cheese, made to a time-honoured recipe, using milk from local farms.

Real Yorkshire Wensleydale is the only Wensleydale actually made in Wensleydale.

The Wensleydale Creamery will continue to brand its cheese ‘Real Yorkshire Wensleydale’.

It has to come from Wensleydale cos its the only place it can come from!

I am also a supporter of the Fair Flags Campaign, see www.fairflags.org.uk Following on from my support for putting the English flag on to English products rather than the Union Jack I discovered that Tesco are selling Wensleydale cheese with the Union Jack. Now Wensleydale is in England, or it was the last time I looked!

However, I have just discovered this initiative and I am glad to lend my support.

I would rather buy my Wensleydale Cheese online than support Tesco, which appears to be anti-English!

Local distinctiveness is vital to our sustainable future, and Wenslydale cheese is a true part of that distinctiveness and should be protected.

If its not made in Wensleydale it shouldn't be called so because fruit cake without real Wensleydale Cheese is like a kiss without a squeeze!

By Glenn Stott in Malton on 2nd Mar 2010

Wensleydale cheese is the best. Only cheese produced in Wensleydale, using local milk and produce, should carry the famous name.

Wensleydale Cheese should be part of Wensleydale and should not be produced in other parts of the country and called Wensleydale Cheese.

My mother in law promised to brain me if I did not use 'modern technology' to record her affection for real Wensleydale cheese.

I just like wallace and grommit, but we all support the same cause. Crackin' food at the creamery though!!

Keep Wenslydale cheese manufacture where it belongs, in Wensleydale it's delicious!

There is only ONE Wensleydale and it is from Yorkshire

Real Wensleydale is the best!

By Richard O'Neill in Northallerton, North Yorkshire on 26th Feb 2010

The clue's in the title! Keep our world renown cheese's origin in Yorkshire! How on earth can it be made elsewhere?! That would simply be unacceptable.
It's part of Yorkshire's heritage and is synonymous with Yorkshire the world over. (And I wont even mention its relationship with Wallace and Gromit)
Proper Wensleydale with a well nice piece of fruit cake an a cuppa tea! Can't beat it eh! Obviously been a Yorkshireman myself, (and originating from Hawes in the early sixties!), I give this appeal my full support.

By Mr Adrian Hemsley in Brompton, Northallerton on 25th Feb 2010

It can't be Wensleydale Cheese if its not made there it goes without saying. Daft I call it! There only is one Wensleydale and that's the Real one.

By Mrs I Hitchen in Bingley, West Yorkshire on 25th Feb 2010

Wensleydale by name, Wensleydale by nature.
